Solar Family Residence - Retrofit, Extensions and Garden
Private Client, South Perth, WA Architect Gérard Siero, 2007 - 2010

The roof curves up and then fades to the east over living spaces and a wrap around verandah that open north and east to a garden shaded by mature, deciduous trees. The contemporary, passive solar, reverse veneer extension harmonises with and respects the 1920′s original house by means of disposition on site, angles, form and proportions, landscape design and sight-lines. Though large and tall, it is largely hidden from the street frontage and only visible obliquely. Through representations, concise design reporting and imaging, we successfully persuaded neighbours and Councillors to support this climate responsive scheme which town planners had tried to reject on mistaken townscape aesthetic restrictions.

With increasing spread of European Pine Borers and re-establishment of termites as residual treatment chemicals reduce in the environment, materials and construction have been selected and treated considering durability and resistance to attack.

Project Architect: Briefing, site analysis and planning, design and documentation, consultant coordination, negotiations and approvals, interiors, contract administration (cost plus, partial service) - construction observation and reporting, problem solving, detailing, and selections are contributing to an extraordinary, vitalising project.
