Through our architecture, landscape and planning, we practice research by design, pushing the boundaries of what we know from project to project according to the site, client, budget and technology, towards design that is affordable, environmentally responsible, sustainable, and a joy to inhabit. We test how we can integrate architecture and landscape with environment in cooperative relationship so as to design for life.

Gérard′s doctoral research: ′Syntropic City′ - To what extent can the philosophy of Deep Ecology and the principles of Green Urbanism and Architecture impact the structural form of contemporary sprawl? explores how an awakening global environmental consciousness might present new opportunities to design ecologically equitable and sustainable communities. The work will test outcomes of design based on values of respect for all life and environmental stewardship towards developing built environments that contribute to the life of Earth’s biosphere - A house as a tree, a city as a forest. The work employs geographical information systems (GIS) mapping for ecological planning to identify and conserve ecological and rural landscapes and so define urban boundaries. In urban areas, diversity and density focused on movement systems and services nodes will be explored. Climate response and topography, landscape and water, effective closed loop technologies and energy systems, liveability and cultural references will be used to inform and test the design of these new and retrofitted human environments.
